Easy, whatever works!
In all seriously though, it actually has to be that simple at the end of the day. There are a lot of prescriptions for what someone “should” be. Taking myself for instance; I’m 193 cm tall and using the “old school” static measurements I “should” be playing irons that are 1” long. Now I’ve done that on a number of occasions, but I’ve always reverted to something else. Why? Because something about it obviously hasn’t clicked, for me. Is it posture? Is it higher swing weight? Is it the resultant quality of strike?
We all know that the quality of strike is influenced by a club’s length. That’s why you will generally find the centre of the face on a driver with a 44” length over the same driver playing at 46”. The same of course goes for irons. If you look at the build specs for players on the PGA Tour, irrespective of how tall they might be it is very rare to see a spec sheet calling for anything greater than +1/2” length.
It’s really important to test the length, and its impact (positive or negative) for yourself. Because you’re a taller than average guy doesn’t mean you need extended lengths clubs. Because you’re a woman doesn’t mean you need shorter clubs. The only thing that is important is what works, for you.
For myself; I’ve generally been playing +1/2” for the last few years. But recently I’ve just reverted back to testing my irons at standard length (risky given the cost of the shafts I use). But what I’m seeing is a noticeable improvement in the quality of contact. You know, when you smoke the ball and you look at the club face and ball impression is right in the middle? For whatever reason it just seems to work, for me. So that’s what I’m going to be rolling with, for the next while anyway.
I’d encourage you to give this a try for yourself. You can try the old gripping down on the club in the first instance and see how that goes. Personally, I’ve never really found that to be a solid assurance of what it would be like but it’s the non-destructive option that has to be explored first.
